In Conversation with Andy Haldane
The Government and Bank of England responded swiftly to the pandemic with a package of measures designed to put the economy on life support while lockdown measures were in place. There have been a significant increase in Universal Credit claims, and the Job Retention Scheme appears to have delayed a wave of redundancies. A raft of other grants, loans and tax deferrals were also put in place to ensure that as many businesses stayed afloat during this period. With lockdown measures now eased and the UK officially in recession, questions remain as to whether the measures were sufficient enough. Rebooting the UK economy will also depend on actions taken globally, where even before the pandemic the situation was uncertain.
Reform is delighted to host this In Conversation with Andy Haldane, Chief Economist, Bank of England. This event will discuss what measures are needed to kickstart the economy again, and how we might capitalise on some of the more transformative opportunities that this crisis has exposed.
